Information Zen

What do we as knowledge managers see as our goal? Are we in the business of “managing” knowledge i.e. arranging it, controlling it, organising it, etc. just for the sake of it? Alternatively, are we in the business of using knowledge to assist us (and others) in taking action? The point being, what is the purpose of acquiring knowledge and not making sure that it is used?

This brings us to the cardinal rules of Librarianship (Information Management) as formulated by S.R Ranganathan in the 19th century. The first one is "Books are for use". This rule speaks volumes to all information /knowledge managers. It is in ensuring that Knowledge in our custody is used that it opens doors more creation of knowledge. This gives impetus to the fifth rule "Library is a growing organism". By putting in place systems that enable sharing of the knowledge, we give it relevance, subject it to scrutiny, enhance growth of the orginal idea through deductive and referntial initiative, etc. As Knowledge managers, we hold special place in our civilization.
