Not a lot of activity here guys ! I am no longer so focused on WCM, my new role being under the heading of 'Knowledge Management' - but whats going on in the WCM world that might be of interest to your fellow group members ????

Iniitial CMIS spec does not include WCM !

Lots of discussion around the blogosphere, as we might expect, on the release of the Content Management Integration Standard, with appears to be based on AIIM's earlier iECM initiative. What I found quite interesting (shocking, disapointing..?) was that WCM functionality is not even included in the first release of the draft specification. Now I can understand why neither Records Management or DAM (or even XML 'Component' content management) are not included, they are likely to be way more complex in the calls required via the abstraction layer that is CMIS, but to not even address WCM - seems a tad odd to me. What does everyone else think ? Any WCM Group members out there involved in the standard ?

Alan,

Cool software, but certainly not "free".

What we do :

ProcessMaster is excellent at capturing a person’s know how on paper, the modern paper that is the computer screen. We do this through software that employs the psychology of how a person explains what they do (sequentially) and how they perceive it (visually). Once we have done that, which is in the format of a computer file, we can do a load of wonderful things - like automatically creating reference repositories, training documentation, and compliance process libraries. Plus, as it is a computer file, it can even be used by IT to build new inexpensive systems.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated

Gartner Market Scope for Web Content Management

So, I was reading the above report on the plane yesterday, it was managing to keep me a wake, until I got to this passage, which made me spray diet coke all over the 'seatback TV':

"From file level to granular: Managing content creation as granular metadata (that is, XML) rathe rthan at the file level (via HTML) requires a combination of authoring, development and classification, as can be found with ".

Now, is it only me that thinks a Gartner report should not be confusing XML Content Management (often termed Component Content Management or CCM) and the generation of metadata ? I mean come on, does the person who wrote this (and the ones who QC'd it) really think because something is a small 'chunk' of XML its metadata not content, do they even know the difference between metadata and content........

OK, so maybe its just me, but to promote some discussion, how do others find the quality of reports from the 'big analysts' ? Are market scopes, magic quadrants et al useful to you ?

Hi Barb

I absolutely have to agree with Chris. You need to select and review your requirements first, based solidly on the needs of the business. Also like Chris I have a couple of clients who have already picked a platform and then hired us to 'suggest how it should work' (not make it work - we are not developers !) Bottom line is that there are more WCM solutions than you can list, all with their own strengths and weaknesses, so you have to line them up against your requirements.

Barb

I work for a systems integrator. My advice would be for your organization to define the business requirements prior to soliciting advice on what specific software to use. To underscore my point; I am currently involved in a project to re-develop an intranet site. The software was selected prior to defining the requirements. My client is now paying my organization to fix things so that they work properly.

I'm a records manager by training, but I have been brought into a committee selecting and reviewing intranet platform software.

Does anyone have any software recommendations?

Dear WCM Group members, I have been a tad busy lately and thus not done much here, for which I apologies, so how about we try to kick off some discussion ? I notice we have nine members, perhaps you could leave a comment on the wall as to what your particular and specific interest is in WCM ?
